The list of symptoms is fairly short: excessive hair growth on various areas of the body. Where the hair grows depends on the variation of hypertrichosis.
There are two generalizations for the disorder:
Congenital (present at birth)
Acquired (developed later in life)
Congenital:
Generalized hypertrichosis: This variation affects almost all of an individual's body, with the exception of palms, soles, and the mucous membranes in the nose. Hair growth is more severe in males than females.
Terminal hypertrichosis: With hair covering the entire body, this is the form that gains the genetic disorder its nickname "werewolf syndrome".
Circumscribed hypertrichosis: Present at birth, this type of hypertrichosis typicalls covers upper extremities. It's usually accompanied by gingival hyperplasia.
Localized hypertrichosis: A localized increase in hair density and length.
Nevoid hypertrichosis: Includes basically an isolated area of hair growth. It's not tied to any other diseases.
